Paying local workers safely: UPI vs cash

For everyday local work, the simplest way to pay is also the safest: directly, between the two of you. No wallet to load, no escrow holding your money for days, and no commission quietly skimmed off the top. The only real question is how — UPI or cash. Here's how to think about it.

Paying by UPI

UPI (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and others) is fast, free, and leaves a record both sides can see. For most jobs it's the cleaner choice.

• Instant and trackable. The worker sees the money arrive; you get a reference.
• No change needed. Pay the exact agreed amount, down to the rupee.
• Safer to carry. No cash on you for bigger jobs.

One tip: confirm the worker's UPI name matches the person you hired before sending, and pay only after the work is done (or in clear stages for a big job you both agreed to).

Paying by cash

Cash still works perfectly well, especially for small jobs or when someone doesn't use UPI. Keep it simple:

• Have the agreed amount ready so there's no fumbling for change.
• Pay on completion unless you've agreed otherwise in advance.
• Confirm "received" out loud or in the app so both sides are clear it's settled.

Why "direct" beats "through the platform"

Some apps route your payment through their own system and take 15–30% as commission, or lock your money in a wallet. That's money leaving the job for no added benefit. When you pay directly:

• The worker keeps 100% of what you both agreed.
• There's no top-up, no withdrawal wait, no failed-payout support ticket.
• You're free to use whatever method suits you both that day.
